NASDAQ Hit New Highs As Technology Stocks Climb

The Toronto Market
The TSX composite index declined -22.90 points or -0.08%, to close the session at 29,027.73. The index terminated eight consecutive sessions of gains today but declined by a relatively small amount. That is impressive. Interestingly, several gold and gold miner stocks were up today, but the TSX index managed to close slightly in the red.

The Market Breadth: Gold and miner stocks were dominant today, repeating Friday’s performance by the sector. Basic Materials sector, up 1.18% was the top sector. Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services gained 0.81%. Financials barely avoided closing in the red, gaining a mere 0.01%. Technology was down -.0545, Utilities was down -0.62%, Telecommunications Services declined -1.00% and Industrials declined -1.01%.
Industry Groups: The top five industry groups in the US markets today were: Aluminum, up 9.12.12%; Consumer Electronics, up 8.65%; Beverages – Non Alcoholic, up 2.92%; Leisure Products, up 2.85%; and Fishing & Farming, up 2.66%.
Today’s Market Statistics
The issues that gained (Advancers) outnumbered those that declined (Decliners). There were three Advancers for every two Decliners, or a more exact ratio of 1.51-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 1,192 Advancers to 790 Decliners while 141 stocks remained Unchanged.
Today, there were 347 new 52-Week Highs and 14 new 52-Week Lows. There were 431 new 52-Week Highs and 20 new 52-Week Lows on Friday.
The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 431,163,603, or 7% higher than the volume of 403,229,727 shares traded on Friday.
Market Roundup Report
The TSX index closed down today, a mere 22 points or -0.08%. Today’s slight decline in no way diminishes the assessment that the index is a roll. Gold and gold miner stocks continue to climb. Agnico Eagle Mines (TSX: AEM) was up 1.19%, Franco Nevada Corp (TSX:FNV) was up1.46%, Kinross Gold Corp (TSX:K) was up 1.7% and Triple Flag Precious Metals Corp (TSX:TFPM) was up 1.12%. There were at least ten gold miner companies among the top twenty gainers on the TSX today.

The US Markets
All three US major indexes gained today. Dow Industrial Average index gained 114.09 points or 0.25%, to close the session at 45,514.95. The S&P 500 index gained 13.65 points or 0.21% and closed the session at 6,495.15. The Nasdaq Composite gained 98.31 points or 0.45%, and closed the session at 21,798.70. In small caps, Russell 2000 gained 3.85 or 0.16%, and closed the session at 2394.89.

The Market Breadth: Technology, up 0.72%, was the top sector today. Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services gained 0.66%, Basic Materials gained 0.47% and Financials gained 0.24%. Durable Consumer Goods & Services declined -0.10% and Energy declined -0.15%. Risk was tolerated by investors today as the usual safe-haven sectors were the worst decliners. Utilities declined -0.67% and Telecommunications Services declined -1.96%.
Industry Groups: The top five industry groups in the US markets today were: Consumer Electronics, up 3.78%; Entertainment Production, up 3.55%; Rails & Roads _ Passengers, up 3.31%; Retail – Computers & Electronics, up 2.01%, and Commercial Services & Supplies, up 1.89%.
Today’s Market Statistics
At the NYSE, the issues that gained (Advancers) outnumbered the issues that declined (Decliners). There were three Advancers for every two Decliners, or a more exact ratio of 1.62-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,630 Advancers to 1,621 Decliners with 310 Unchanged.
Today, there were 314 new 52-Week Highs and 104 new 52-Week Lows. There were 508 new 52-Week Highs and 64 new 52-Week Lows on Thursday.
The total volume of stocks traded today at the NYSE was 5,368,490,952, 4% higher than the total volume of 5,131,112,077 shares traded on Thursday.
On the NASDAQ, the Advancers outnumbered the Decliners. There were three Advancers for every two Decliners, or an exact ratio of 1.41-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,724 Advancers to 1,920 Decliners with 246 Unchanged.
Today, there were 314 new 52-Week Highs and 104 new 52-Week Lows. There were 174 new 52-Week Highs and 152 new 52-Week Lows on Friday.
The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ today was 8,717,505,738, or 1% higher than the total volume of 8,584,393,553 shares traded on Friday.
Market Roundup Report
Technology stocks roared back today, driving NASDAQ index to a new High. Robin Hood Markets (HOOD) and Applovin Corporation will be joining the S&P 500 index. Applovin Corporation (APP) and Robinhood Markets stocks are stocks to keep an eye on in the short term, as Institutional investors, the big guys, like to add members of the major indexes to their portfolios. APP stock gained 11.58% or $56.80, closed at $547.04 with 16.51M shares traded, while HOOD stock gained 15.83% or $16.03 to close at $117.28 with 102M shares changing hands. Astera Labs Inc. (ALAB) gained 13.02% or $24.90, closed at $216.10 with 9.8M shares traded. Some interesting data – Astera Labs closed at $102.13 on July 18. The stock doubled in a little less than two months.
Coreweave, Inc. (CRWV) faltered heavily since it hit a high of $175 in late June. The stock, however, may now be attempting to regain some of the losses now. Oil Price: U.S. crude oil prices rose, with West Texas intermediate futures trading near $62.40 per barrel. US Oil price was at $62.77 per barrel, as of the time (11:00 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.
10 –year Treasury Yield: The 10-year Treasury yield is down four basis points to 4.05%. The 10-year yield was at 4.057%, as of the time (11:00 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.
Gold was down slightly earlier today. Gold price picked up later in the evening and is currently at $3,687.00 per troy ounce, while Silver is down slightly and at $41.875 per ounce as of the time of this post update.
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) is at $113,021.00, up 0.76% as of the time (11:00 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.
After-hours action: Stock Futures are little changed this evening. Dow Futures is up 51.00 points or 0.11% vs. fair value. S&P 500 futures is up 9.50 points or 0.16%, and Nasdaq 100 futures is up 51.50 points or 0.21% as of the time (11:00 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.
