Today’s Market Statistics

On the TSX today, advancing issues outnumbered decliners by roughly five to three. Specifically, there were 725 advancers and 1,216 decliners, resulting in an advancer-to-decliner ratio of 1.67 to 1, with 139 issues unchanged.

The exchange recorded 189 new 52-week highs and 9 new 52-week lows, compared with 153 new highs and 28 new lows on Friday.

Market Wrap-Up Report

Market breadth favored the gainers today. Energy led all sectors, though several non-energy names were also among the TSX’s top performers. Telecommunication Services, up 1.10%, followed Energy, while Consumer Discretionary, often viewed as a gauge of retail sector strength, ranked next.

Among retail names, Pet Valu Holdings Ltd. stood out as the only retail stock in the day’s top dozen performers, advancing 3.67%.

Bombardier Inc. (BBD.B), a frequent presence among the year’s top gainers, appeared on the list again. The stock rose 1.90%, or $3.79, to close at $203.78, with 223.5K shares traded.

In the energy space, Suncor Energy Inc. climbed 2.2%, or $1.33, to finish at $61.72, on 4.5M shares.

Among gold miners, Agnico Eagle Mines (TSX:AEM) and Franco-Nevada Corp. (TSX:FNV) edged lower in what appeared to be a healthy pullback — potentially setting the stage for renewed momentum when gold prices turn higher. In contrast, Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (TSX:WPM) advanced 1.68%, or $2.41, closing at $145.80 with 621.8K shares traded.

Blue chips drove the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a record closing high today. The Dow jumped 559 points, or 1.2%, marking a new all-time high. The S&P 500 reversed earlier losses to finish 0.2% higher, extending its winning streak to three consecutive sessions.

The rally in the Dow was fueled by strong performances from Merck (MRK), Nike (NKE), and Amgen (AMGN) — each gaining roughly 4%. The session marked a particularly strong day for blue-chip stocks, underscoring continued investor rotation into large-cap value names.

Sector and Volume Overview

Trading volume across U.S. markets was relatively light. While the Dow and S&P 500 posted gains and the Nasdaq finished slightly lower, total U.S. market turnover was notably below recent averages.

Sector performance reflected a clear rotation from Technology into Healthcare, particularly within the biomedical segment. Healthcare led all sectors, advancing 2.41%, while Technology lagged behind, posting the day’s weakest performance. Utilities followed just ahead of Technology. In total, seven of the eleven S&P sectors closed in positive territory.

Stock Highlights

The Nasdaq Composite remained under pressure for most of the session, briefly paring losses in the afternoon before ending in the red. Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) fell nearly 3%, continuing its recent slide. Given Nvidia’s heavy weighting, its performance remains closely tied to the broader Nasdaq’s direction.

Rocket Lab USA (RKLB), which reported earnings on Monday, initially climbed to $56.96 early in Tuesday’s session but closed down 1.3% at $51.24. The company, still unprofitable like several small modular reactor (SMR) developers, has nevertheless surged 101% year-to-date.

In the mining space, AngloGold Ashanti (AU) rose 6%, extending a four-day winning streak despite gold prices remaining in a short-term pullback.
