The Toronto Market

The TSX composite index declined -169.92 points or -0.62%, to close the session at 27,369.96.  The total volume of shares traded was about the same as the volume of shares traded yesterday. The TSX decline was a sort of orderly pullback.

                                                                                                                     

The Market Breadth:  The TSX index suffered a three-digit decline today. Only one sector, Utilities, up 0.30%, gained. Energy and Industrials declined -0.08% and -0.18% respectively. Telecommunications Services declined -0.19%, Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services declined -0.37%, and Financials declined -0.53%. Technology declined -0.65%, Healthcare declined -0.71%, and Durable Consumer Goods & Services declined -0.78%. Basic Materials, down -2.06%, was the laggard sector.

Industry Groups:  The top five industry groups in the TSX today were: Textiles & Leather Goods, up 10.34%; Consumer Electronics, up 7.52%; Oil & Gas Drilling, up 2.59%; Beverages – Non-Alcoholic, up 2.37%; and Construction & Agricultural Machinery, up 2.01%. Aluula Composites Inc. (TSX:AUUA) is a company within the Textiles & Leather Goods group. AUUA stock gained 10.34% or $0.15 and closed at $1.60 with 69.4k shares traded. Consumer Electronics group performance today was driven by the performance of Vitalist Inc. (TSX:VITA), which gained 7.69% or $0.05, closing the session at $0.70 with 1.5k shares traded. The two are very small cap companies. Trading in very small cap companies, often referred to as penny stocks, may not be suitable for some investors. Today’s Market Statistics

Today, the issues that declined (Decliners) outnumbered those that gained (Advancers). There were three Decliners for every two Advancers, or a more exact ratio of 1.51-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 1,171 Decliners to 772 Advancers while 161 stocks remained Unchanged.

Today, there were 229 new 52-Week Highs and 11 new 52-Week Lows. There were 240 new 52-Week Highs and 13 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.

The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 335,417,214, or 2%, roughly the same as the volume of 329,622,540 shares traded yesterday.

The US Markets

Today was a mixed market session for the indexes. The Dow Jones Average index declined -171.71 points or -0.38%, to close the session at 44,461.28. The S&P 500 index declined -7.96 points or -0.12% to close at 6,362.90. The Nasdaq Composite gained 31.38 points or 0.15%, to close the session at 21,129.67. In small caps, Russell 2000 declined -10.57 or -0.47% to close the session at 2232.40. The small caps have now declined three consecutive market sessions.

The Market Breadth:  Only three of the eleven S&P 500 sectors gained today. Utilities, up 0.91%, was the top sector. Technology gained 0.24% and Telecommunications Services gained 0.15%. Industrials declined -0.45%, Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services declined -0.55%, and Financials declined -0.65%. Durable Consumer Goods & Services declined -0.73% and Energy declined -1.36%. Basic Materials, down -2.44%, was the laggard. Utilities declined -0.86%, and Financials declined -0.99%. Basic Materials declined -1.43% and down -1.76%, was the laggard sector.

Industry Groups:  The top five industry groups in the US markets today were: Diversified Trading & Distributing, up 17.67%; Marine Port Services, up 6.84%; Fishing & Farming, up 4.76%; Advertising & Marketing, up 4.57%; and Managed Health Care, up 2.52%.

Today’s Market Statistics

At the NYSE, the issues that declined (Decliners) outnumbered the issues that gained (Advancers). There were roughly five Decliners for every two Advancers, or a more exact ratio of 2.40-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,901 Decliners to 1,207 Advancers with 308 Unchanged.

Today, there were 182 new 52-Week Highs and 79 new 52-Week Lows. There were 246 new 52-Week Highs and 62 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.

The total volume of stocks traded today at the NYSE was 5,462,261,680, or 6% more than the total volume of 5,163,143,492 shares traded yesterday.

On the NASDAQ, the Decliners outnumbered the Advancers. There were two Decliners for every Advancer, or an exact ratio of 2.09-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 3,103 Decliners to 1,481 Advancers with 257 Unchanged.

Today, there were 131 new 52-Week Highs and 116 new 52-Week Lows. There were 198 new 52-Week Highs and 101 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.

The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ today was 9,831,597,449, or 5% less than the total volume of 10,370,536,570 shares traded yesterday.

Market Roundup Report

The stock market rally opened higher, with the S&P 500 and NASDAQ composite hitting fresh records. The key indexes, however, turned lower heading into the late afternoon and after the Fed’s post-meeting statements.  The Federal Reserve voted to keep the interest rate unchanged. Two of the bank’s governors voted against the decision. There was no indication of what the Federal Reserve might do regarding interest rate cut at their September meeting.

Microsoft and Meta Platforms delivered upbeat earnings reports after market close. Futures turned upwards. The market will always do what it wishes to do, but given the upbeat earnings report from the two companies, the technology sector and possibly a good number of the sectors should do well at the market session tomorrow.

Oil Price:  Earlier today, the U.S. crude oil prices jumped 3.75% to $69.21 a barrel. US Oil price was at $69.85 per barrel, as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Wednesday) of this post update.

10 –year Treasury Yield:  The 10-year Treasury yield dropped nine basis points to 4.33% earlier today. The 10-year yield was at 4.368%, as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Wednesday) of this post update.

Bitcoin (BTC-USD) is at $118,389 as of the time of this post update.

After-hours action: Stock Futures are up this evening, driven by the upbeat earnings reports delivered by Microsoft Corporation and Meta Platforms earlier this evening. Dow Futures is up 124.00 points or 0.28% vs. fair value. S&P 500 futures is up 56.50 points or 0.88%, and Nasdaq 100 futures is up 298.25 points or 1.27% as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Wednesday) of this post update.
