The Toronto Market

The TSX composite index declined -15.88 points or -0.06%, to close the session at 27,020.28. There was some volatility during the session, but most of the time the TSX remained and closed above the 27,000 level.

                                                                                                     

The Market Breadth:  Four of the ten major sectors gained in the market session today. Basic Materials up 1.17% and Telecommunications Services, up 1.13%, were the top two sectors. Technology gained 0.27%, and Utilities gained 0.16% to make the other two sectors, which gained today. Durable Consumer Goods & Services declined -0.05%; Healthcare declined -0.10%; and Industrials gained -0.19%. Financials declined -0.36% and Energy, down -0.74%, was the laggard today.

Industry Groups:  The top five industry groups in the TSX today were: Aluminum, up 14.29%; Publishing, up 7.54%; Textiles & leather Goods, up 5.88%; Computer Hardware, up 5.87%; and Advanced Medical Equipment, up 3.14%.

Today’s Market Statistics

Today, the issues that declined (Decliners) outnumbered those that gained (Advancers). There were seven Decliners for every five Advancers, or a more exact ratio of 1.35-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 1,146 Decliners to 849 Advancers while 152 stocks remained Unchanged.

Today, there were 199 new 52-Week Highs and 11 new 52-Week Lows. There were 267 new 52-Week Highs and 15 new 52-Week Lows on Friday.

The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 446,448,116, or 50% higher than the volume of 300,451,023 shares traded on Friday.

The US Markets

The Dow Jones Average index declined -422.17 points or -0.94%, to close the session at 44,406.36. The S&P 500 index declined -49.37 points or -0.79% to close at 6,229.98. The Nasdaq Composite declined -188.59 points or -0.92%, to close the session at 20,412.52. In small caps, Russell 2000 ended the session at 2214.23, declining -34.81 points or -1.55%, a much bigger decline compared to the other three indexes.

The Market Breadth:  Utilities, up 0.19%, was the only sector to end the session gaining.  Durable Consumer Goods & Services was almost flat, as the sector declined -0.01%; Technology declined -0.77%; Telecommunications Services declined -0.87%; Basic Materials declined -1.00%; Financials declined -1.11%; Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services declined -1.26%; and Energy, down -1.36%, was the laggard sector today.

Industry Groups:  The top five industry groups in the US markets today were: Marine Port Services, up 2.48%; Advertising / Marketing, up 2.29%; Retail –Drugs, up 1.93%; Leisure & Recreation, up 1.39%; and Tobacco, up 1.03%.

Today’s Market Statistics 

At the NYSE, the issues that declined (Decliners) outnumbered the issues that gained (Advancers). There were roughly seven Decliners for every two Advancers, or an exact ratio of 3.44-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 3,229 Decliners to 938 Advancers with 306 Unchanged.

Today, there were 209 new 52-Week Highs and 32 new 52-Week Lows. There were 450 new 52-Week Highs and 33 new 52-Week Lows on Thursday.

The total volume of stocks traded today at the NYSE was 5,306,573,424, or about 55% higher than the total volume of 3,415,058,830 shares traded on Thursday.

On the NASDAQ, the Decliners outnumbered the Advancers. There were roughly three Decliners for every Advancer, or an exact ratio of 2.73-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 3,354 Decliners to 1,226 Advancers with 240 Unchanged.

Today, there were 145 new 52-Week Highs and 70 new 52-Week Lows. There were 308 new 52-Week Highs and 35 new 52-Week Lows on Thursday.

The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ today was 8,537,399,716, or 35% higher than the total volume of 6,327,601,051 shares traded on Thursday.

Oil Price:     On Monday, US oil prices rose, and the US WTI oil price was at $67.94 per barrel earlier today.  US Oil price was at $67.65 per barrel as of the time (11:00 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.

10 –year Treasury Yield:   The 10-year Treasury inched higher to 4.39% in the afternoon. The 10-year yield was at 4.381%, as of the time (11:30 am ET, Monday) of this post update.

After-hours action:  Futures have kept slightly up and down all evening. Dow Futures was down -39.00 points or -0.09% vs. fair value. S&P 500 futures is currently flat, and Nasdaq 100 futures is up 35.00 points or 0.15% as of the time (11:00 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.
