Indexes headed south after hot July producer price index report

The Toronto Market
The TSX composite index declined -77.44 points or -0.28%, to close the session at 27,915.99. The TSX turned back and failed to cross the 28,000 level today. The level, for now, has become a resistance for the index.

Today’s Market Statistics: The issues that declined (Decliners) outnumbered those that gained (Advancers). There were roughly two Advancers for every Decliner, or a more exact ratio of 2.2-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 1,012 Advancers to 848 Decliners while 165 stocks remained Unchanged.
Today, there were 239 new 52-Week Highs and 11 new 52-Week Lows. There were 423 new 52-Week Highs and 24 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.
The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 355,940,449, or 12.5% lower than the volume of 406,380,378 shares traded yesterday.
Market Roundup Report
The volume at the TSX was down significantly compared to yesterday, but the market declined. Today’s decline as such does not have institutional backing. Gildan Activewear Inc. continued to build on the upswing started yesterday after signing the deal to acquire HanesBrands.

The US Markets
Today was a mixed market session. The markets took a break from the record-high performances of the past two sessions. Dow Jones Average index declined -11.01 points or -0.02%, to close the session at 44,911.26. The S&P 500 index gained 1.96 points or 0.03% and closed the market session at 6,468.54. The Nasdaq Composite declined -2.47 points or -0.01%, and closed the session at 21,710.67. In small caps, Russell 2000 declined -28.98 points or 1.24%, to close the session at 2299.08. The small caps declined after two successive sessions of buoyant performance.

Today’s Market Statistics
At the NYSE, the issues that declined (Decliners) outnumbered the issues that gained (Advancers). There were nine Decliners for every four Advancers, or a more exact ratio of 2.29-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,876 Advancers to 1,257 Decliners with 317 Unchanged.
Today, there were 263 new 52-Week Highs and 44 new 52-Week Lows. There were 630 new 52-Week Highs and 56 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.
The total volume of stocks traded today at the NYSE was 4,611,265,366, or 13% lower than the total volume of 5,299,338,207 shares traded yesterday.
On the NASDAQ, the Decliners outnumbered the Advancers today. There were roughly two Decliners for every Advancer, or an exact ratio of 2.17-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 3,146 Decliners to 1,450 Advancers with 257 Unchanged.
Today, there were 151 new 52-Week Highs and 93 new 52-Week Lows. There were 422 new 52-Week Highs and 87 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.
The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ today was 9,435,754,505, or 4.8% higher than the total volume of 9,004,195,623 shares traded yesterday.
Market Roundup Report
US Producer Prices Index (PPI) rose 0.9% in July vs. 0.2% expectations. The 12-month PPI inflation rate unexpectedly jumped to 3.3% from 2.4% in June. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ indexes have been residing in record territory for some time. Several stocks are currently price extended. The indexes will need to consolidate or go into consolidation for some time before another major dive up. Investors should watch out for stocks with price extended, and if possible, avoid them in the short term. The S&P and NASDAQ are currently marking time while waiting for a trigger to push them up or down.
Oil Price: US Crude Oil price rose to a one week high. US Oil price was at $63.63 per barrel, as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Thursday) of this post update.
10 –year Treasury Yield: The 10-year Treasury yield rose a few basis points in response to the hot PPI report released earlier today. The 10-year yield was at 4.281%, as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Thursday) of this post update.
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) is at $119,239.99, up 0.83% as at the time (11:30 pm ET, Thursday) of this post update.
After-hours action: Stock Futures are all up, but Dow futures were much higher earlier this evening. Dow Futures is up 342.00 points or 0.77% vs. fair value. S&P 500 futures is up 14.75 points or 0.23%, and Nasdaq 100 futures is up 9.25 points or 0.05% as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Thursday) of this post update.
