Equities Drift Lower as Investors Continue to Rotate Out of Technology

The Toronto Market
The S&P/TSX Composite Index declined by 43.95 points, or 0.14%, closing at 31,483.44. The index has now fallen for two consecutive sessions. Although it opened higher, the market declined immediately after the open, attempted a recovery, but failed and closed lower. Despite today’s pullback, the index remains well above both its 25-day and 50-day moving averages.

Today’s Toronto Market Statistics
On the TSX, advancing issues outnumbered declining issues by approximately nine to five. Specifically, there were 1,171 advancers and 895 decliners, resulting in an advancer-to-decliner ratio of 1.72 to 1, with 134 issues unchanged.
There were 175 new 52-week highs and 32 new 52-week lows, compared with 237 new 52-week highs and 32 new 52-week lows recorded on Friday.
Total trading volume on the TSX reached 479,149,589 shares, down approximately 4.4% from the 501,204,746 shares traded on Friday.
Toronto Market Wrap-Up Report
The Toronto was an all-round negative market sessions today. The TSX declined but the index largely oscillated up and down around the previous close value. Utilities, Durable Consumer Goods & Services and Financials were the top performing sectors today. Energy and Technology were the laggard sectors. Silver miners were prominent in the list of top performing stocks today. There appears to be general rotation away from the technology sector.
A notable top performer today is Empire Company Ltd, (TSX: EMP.A). The company operates large and small grocery stores across the country. On the negative side, Shopify (TSX: SHOP) was down -2.62% or -$5.93, closed at 220.22 with 1.5M shares traded. Celestica Inc. (TSX: CLS), down 12.92% on Friday, was down today another -1.13%, closed at $417.01 with 556K shares traded.
The current rotation away from Technology is ongoing in the Toronto market as well as in the US markets.

The US Markets
U.S. Market Indexes
Major U.S. equity indexes ended today’s session in the red for a second consecutive day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 41.49 points, or 0.09%, to close at 48,416.56. The S&P 500 declined 10.90 points, or 0.16%, ending the session at 6,816.51. The Nasdaq Composite fell 137.76 points, or 0.59%, finishing at 23,057.41.
The Russell 2000 dropped 20.79 points, or 0.81%, closing at 2,530.67, reflecting a particularly difficult session for small-cap stocks. The NASDAQ was the weakest performer among the major U.S. indexes for the second consecutive session.
The small-cap index opened higher but trended lower throughout the day, closing near session lows.

Today’s U.S. Market Statistics
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
On the NYSE, declining issues narrowly outnumbered advancing issues. There were 2,146 decliners, 2,144 advancers, and 363 unchanged issues, resulting in a near-even decliner-to-advancer ratio of approximately 1.00 to 1.
The exchange recorded 283 new 52-week highs and 93 new 52-week lows, compared with 164 new highs and 21 new lows on Friday.
Total NYSE trading volume reached 5,127,358,572 shares, up about 1% from the 5,058,205,123 shares traded on Friday.
NASDAQ
On the NASDAQ, declining stocks outnumbered advancing stocks by roughly two to one. There were 3,082 decliners and 1,728 advancers, producing a decliner-to-advancer ratio of approximately 1.78 to 1, with 295 issues unchanged.
The exchange posted 179 new 52-week highs and 273 new 52-week lows, compared with 232 new highs and 141 new lows recorded on Friday.
Total NASDAQ trading volume amounted to 8,940,816,462 shares, about 1% lower than Friday’s 9,040,445,932 shares.
Commodities and Bonds
Crude Oil
U.S. crude oil futures were lower as optimism grew around Ukraine peace talks, raising expectations of a potential end to the conflict. Crude oil was trading at $55.98 per barrel as of 11:30 p.m. EDT on Monday.
Precious Metals
Gold prices declined $31.60, or 0.72%, to $4,304.30 per troy ounce, while silver fell $0.62, or 0.68%, to $62.99 per ounce as of the time of this update.
Cryptocurrency
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) was trading higher by $456.00, or 0.53%, at $86,298.00 as of 11:30 p.m. EDT.
U.S. Treasury Yield
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell by one basis point earlier in the day and was at 4.167% as of 11:30 p.m. EDT.
After-Hours Market Action
U.S. stock futures were lower Monday evening. Dow Jones futures were down 97 points, or 0.20%, versus fair value. S&P 500 futures declined 25.50 points, or 0.37%, to 6,856.50, while Nasdaq 100 futures fell 139 points, or 0.55%, to 25,205.25 as of 11:30 p.m. EDT.
