The Toronto Market

The S&P/TSX Composite Index advanced 279.60 points (+0.90%) to 31,180.25, further extending the upward trend that began on Friday. Now registering four consecutive sessions of gains. Volume of shares traded was down today but decline in volume today was not close to the decrease recorded yesterday. There was also broad-based sector participation today but a bit less broad based compared to yesterday’s market.

                                                                                                                                                                           

Toronto’s Market Statistics Today:  At the TSX, advancing issues (advancers) outnumbered declining issues (decliners) by approximately seven to two. Specifically, there were 1,598 advancers and 461 decliners, producing a real advancer-to-decliner ratio of 3.46 to 1, with 121 issues unchanged.

There were 225 new 52-Week highs and 18 new 52-Week lows, compared with 66 new 52-Week Highs and 24 new 52-Week Lows recorded yesterday.

Total trading volume on the TSX reached 413,190,112 shares, down 7% from 445,488,817 shares traded yesterday.

Toronto Market Wrap-Up Report

The TSX Index extended its winning streak to a fourth consecutive session, closing above the 31,000 level. Basic Materials led the market with a strong 3.42% gain, while Technology followed with a modest 0.64% increase. Overall, market action was overwhelmingly driven by strength in Basic Materials.

Gold- and mining-related stocks dominated the session. The top twenty TSX performers were almost entirely gold miners, with a few silver miners mixed in.

Further down the list, NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX: NXE), Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE), Boyd Group Services Inc. (TSX: BYD), and Ero Copper Corp. made notable appearances. Franco-Nevada Corp., which received an analyst upgrade earlier in the day, also ranked among the stronger performers, appearing roughly two-thirds of the way down the leaderboard. Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP) is up five consecutive sessions and is in recovery mode from sharp and downturn in late October and early this month.

 

Energy names were generally weaker. Stocks such as Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX: SU) were down slightly on the day.

The US Markets

All major North American market indexes advanced on Wednesday registering four days, each of solid advance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 314.67 points, or 0.67%, to close the session at 47,427.12. The S&P 500 index rose 46.73 points or 0.69%, ending the session at 6,812.61. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 189.10 points or 0.82% to finish at 23,214.69.

The Russell 2000 index, advanced 20.14 points, or 0.82%, to close the session at 2,486.12.   Small-caps continue to rally. Today Russell 2000 index was advancing continuously till late afternoon. There was some selling in the last hour of the session as investors dumped small caps in particular before proceeding on the Thanksgiving break. The index dropped 16 points in the last hour of the session. The market is closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving  and the Friday session will be a half day session which will typically end at 1:00pm.

Today’s U.S. Market Statistics

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) : Advancing issues once again outpaced decliners. The NYSE recorded 3,275 advancers, 972 decliners, and 369 unchanged issues, resulting in an advancer-to-decliner ratio of 3.37 to 1—roughly four advancers for every decliner.

The exchange saw 290 new 52-week highs and 29 new 52-week lows, an increase in highs and a decrease in lows compared with yesterday’s 181 highs and 45 lows.

Total trading volume reached 4,550,080,421 shares, down 11% from yesterday’s 5,125,849,930 shares.

NASDAQ: Advancers also led on the NASDAQ, where 3,262 stocks advanced and 1,488 declined, with 275 unchanged. This produced an advancer-to-decliner ratio of 2.20 to 1, or roughly five advancers for every two decliners.

The exchange reported 242 new 52-week highs and 63 new 52-week lows, compared with yesterday’s 195 highs and 104 lows.

Total NASDAQ volume totaled 7,504,015,953 shares, a 14% decline from yesterday’s 8,745,458,037 shares.

Pan American Silver Corp (TSX: PAAS)  or  (NYSE:PAAS) is a stock worth keeping an eye on. The stock was up 7.77% or  $3.07, closed at $42.56 with 8M shares traded at the NYSE.
