U.S. indexes closed mixed amid ongoing market caution driven by U.S.–China trade tensions

The Toronto Market
The TSX Composite Index posted another strong performance today, building on yesterday’s robust advance. The index rose 283.51 points, or 0.93%, to close at 30,637.12. For now, the market’s upward momentum appears to be firmly intact.

Today’s Market Statistics: Advancers outnumbered Decliners by a ratio of 2.19 to 1, roughly two advancers for every decliner. In total, 1,405 stocks advanced, 642 declined, and 136 remained unchanged.
There were 389 new 52-week highs and 22 new 52-week lows, compared to 250 highs and 20 lows yesterday.
Trading volume on the TSX reached 523,224,680 shares, down 18% from 635,650,972 shares traded yesterday. The higher volume yesterday was likely influenced by Monday’s public holiday.

The US Market
It was a mixed session on Wall Street today, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 17.15 points, or 0.04%, to close at 46,253.31. In contrast, the broader market saw gains: the S&P 500 rose 26.75 points (+0.40%) to 6,671.06, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 148.38 points (+0.66%) to finish at 22,670.08.
The standout performer was the Russell 2000, which advanced 24.26 points (+0.97%) to close at 2,519.75, reaching a new record high. Despite intraday volatility, small-cap stocks showed notable strength, contributing to the index’s upward momentum.

Today’s Market Statistics: At the NYSE, the issues that gained (Advancers) outnumbered the issues that declined (Decliners). There were roughly eight Advancers for every five Decliners, or a more exact ratio of 1.73-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,660 Advancers to 1,535 Decliners with 362 Unchanged.
Today, there were 334 new 52-Week Highs and 57 new 52-Week Lows. There were 165 new 52-Week Highs and 86 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.
The total volume of stocks traded today at the NYSE was 5,720,283,909, or about the same as the total volume 5,736,772,872 shares traded yesterday.
On the NASDAQ, the Advancers outnumbered the Decliners. There were three Advancers for every two Decliners, or an exact ratio of 1.45-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,807 Advancers to 1,931 Decliners with 256 Unchanged.
Today, there were 308 new 52-Week Highs and 63 new 52-Week Lows. There were 232 new 52-Week Highs and 120 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.
The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ today was 11,831,077,255, or 16% higher than the total volume of 10,138,056,906 shares traded yesterday.
Market Wrap-Up Report
The market closed mixed amid choppy trading today, though the broader rally remains intact. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended in the red, snapping a two-day streak of strong gains. Volatility was largely attributed to renewed U.S.–China trade tensions, with investors awaiting potential progress when the two countries’ presidents meet at the upcoming Asian summit later this month.
Sector Highlights
Despite the mixed market, several sectors posted solid gains:

- Utilities: +0.84%
- Basic Materials: +0.47%
The Financials sector ended the day up a modest 0.27%, despite Bank of America (BAC) delivering a strong Q3 earnings report. BAC shares rose 4.4% (+$2.91) to close at $52.28, with over 70 million shares traded. Other major banks had reported their earnings on Tuesday.
Industry Performance
Leading industry groups today included:
- Marine Port Services: +4.99%
- Semiconductor Equipment & Testing: +3.86%
- Precious Metals & Minerals: +3.23%
However, not all commodity-related groups performed well. In the Rare Earth Minerals space, both MP Materials Corp (MP) and USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR) saw notable declines of -8.89% and -10.29%, respectively. Trading volumes for both stocks were down approximately 15% compared to average levels.
Market Outlook: Growth stocks generally outperformed today, helping to support the broader market. While intraday volatility remains, investor sentiment appears resilient, and the market uptrend remains intact for now.
Oil Price: U.S. crude oil price fell about 1.3% earlier in the day. US Oil price is down at $58.78 per barrel, as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Wednesday) of this post update.
Gold price is up 1.08% at $4,246.80 while silver price is up 1.96% at $52.37 per ounce as of the time of this post update.
