Major Indexes Finish Strong Week; S&P 500 Touches Record High Friday

The Toronto Market

The Toronto market was closed on Friday in observance of the Boxing Day public holiday.

The US Markets

Friday marked this year’s day after Christmas, which typically sees light trading volume. In addition, the session was characterized by modest declines across the market. All major indexes finished lower, though the losses were minimal and largely negligible.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 20.19 points, or 0.04%, to close at 48,710.97. The S&P 500 edged down 2.11 points, or 0.03%, ending the session at 6,929.94. The Nasdaq Composite declined 20.21 points, or 0.09%, to finish at 23,593.10.

The Russell 2000 experienced a larger percentage decline, falling 13.74 points, or 0.54%, to close at 2,534.35. Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Russell 2000 trended lower from the opening bell. While large-cap stocks recovered from their intraday lows and closed well above them, the small-cap Russell 2000 finished only slightly above its session low.

       

Today’s U.S. Market Statistics

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE): Advancing issues outnumbered declining issues on the NYSE. There were 2,207 advancers, 1,955 decliners, and 467 unchanged issues, resulting in an advancer-to-decliner ratio of 1.12 to 1—approximately one advancer for every decliner.

The exchange recorded 342 new 52-week highs and 66 new 52-week lows, compared with 301 new highs and 62 new lows on Wednesday.
Total NYSE trading volume reached 2,659,119,159 shares, up 40% from the 1,889,102,053 shares traded on Wednesday which was a half-day market session.

NASDAQ: At the NASDAQ, declining stocks outnumbered advancing stocks, with roughly six decliners for every five advancers. Specifically, there were 2,652 decliners, 2,021 advancers, and 344 unchanged issues, producing a decliner-to-advancer ratio of 1.31 to 1.

The exchange posted 140 new 52-week highs and 197 new 52-week lows, compared with 148 new highs and 174 new lows recorded on Wednesday.
Total NASDAQ trading volume amounted to 5,221,565,085 shares, representing a 29% increase from Wednesday’s volume of 4,031,617,840 shares. Markets opened for a half-day session only on Wednesday.

Commodities and Bonds  

Oil Price:     U.S. crude oil futures rose about 0.4% and was at $56.74 per barrel on Friday. Crude Oil was down -2.43% at $56.93 per barrel, as of the time (11:30 pm EST, Saturday) of this post update.

Gold price is up $59.20, or 1.31%, at $4,562.00 per troy ounce, while silver price is up $7.99, or 11.15%, at $79.67 per ounce as of the time of this post update. Gold and platinum are at record highs and silver has now crossed the $77.00 price mark.

Bitcoin (BTC-USD) was trading up $71.31 or 0.08% at $87,572.00 as of the time of this post update.

10 –year Treasury Yield:   The 10-year Treasury yield declined two basis points to 4.13%. The 10-year yield is at 4.13%, as of the time (5:00 pm EST, Friday) of this post update.

After-hours action:    Stock Futures will reopen at 6pm Sunday evening.
