US – UK Trade deal energized the current rally until tax hike talk brought some dampers

The Toronto Market
The TSX composite index was up 92.88 points or 0.37%, to close the session at 25,254.06. The total volume of shares traded today was about the same as the total volume of shares traded yesterday, so market gains are occurring with some stability, also returning to the market.

The Market Breadth
Seven of the ten major sectors gained in the market session. Telecommunications Services, up 1.91%, down -0.71% and the laggard yesterday, was the top sector today. Discretionary Consumer Goods and Services was up 1.47%; Technology was up 1.16%; Industrials was up 1.00%; Energy was up 0.79%; and Financials was up 0.73%. The laggards today were Utilities, down -0.68%; Basic Materials, down -1.03%; and Durable Consumer Goods and Services, down -2.35%, a quite significant decline.
Industry Groups: The top five industry groups in the TSX today were: Textiles & Leather Goods, up a whopping 42.86%; Computer Hardware, up 18.06%; Home Furnishing, up 6.03%; Containers & Packaging, up 5.82%; and Auto / Truck / Motorcycle Parts, up 5.08%.
Today’s Statistics
Today, the issues that gained (Advancers) outnumbered those that declined (Decliners). There were roughly two Advancers for every Decliner, or a more exact ratio of 2.16-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 1,291 Advancers to 597 Decliners while 134 stocks remained Unchanged.
Today, there were 77 new 52-Week Highs and 10 new 52-Week Lows. There were 60 new 52-Week Highs and 11 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.
The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 407,969,762, or about 1%, or just a slight increase, more than the volume of 403,749,767 shares traded yesterday.

The US Markets
All three indexes gained again today, repeating yesterday’s positive market session’s performance. The Dow Jones Average index advanced 254.48 points or 0.62% to close at 41,368.45. The S&P 500 index was up 32.66 points or 0.58% to close at 5,663.94. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 189.98 points or 1.07%, to close at 17,928.14. In small caps, Russell 2000 was up 36.75 points or 1.85% to close at 2026.41.

The Market Breadth
Six of the major sectors gained today compared to eight yesterday, however, the percentage gains were higher today. Industrials, up 1.21%, was the top sector today. Retail stocks continue to do well. Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services, up 1.19% today, has recently always been among the top sectors. Energy was up 1.07%; Technology gained 0.91%; Financials, up 0.27% yesterday, was up 0.86% today; and Basic Materials was up 0.49%. Durable Consumer Goods & Services declined -0.73%. Utilities, down -1.01%, and Telecommunications Services, down -1.20%, were the laggards today. When Utilities and Telecommunications Services, traditionally the safe sectors, are the session’s laggards, that is an indication that investors are becoming less risk-averse.
Industry Groups: The top five industry groups at the US markets today were: Marine Port Services, up 22.53%; Appliances, Tools & Housewares, up 9.16%; Textiles & Leather Goods, up 8.02%; Chemicals – Agricultural, up 4.64%; and Airlines, up 4.06%.
Today’s Market Statistics
At the NYSE, the issues that gained (Advancers) outnumbered the issues that declined (Decliners). There were roughly two Advancers for every Decliner, or an exact ratio of 1.82-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,679 Advancers to 1,470 Decliners with 270 Unchanged.
Today, there were 105 new 52-Week Highs and 60 new 52-Week Lows. There were 83 new 52-Week Highs and 59 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.
The total volume of stocks traded today at the NYSE was 5,742,646,994, or 13%, more than the total volume of 5,058,622,076 shares traded yesterday.
On the NASDAQ, the Advancers outnumbered the Decliners. There were roughly two Advancers for every Decliner, or an exact ratio of 2.1-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 3,002 Advancers to 1,429 Decliners with 234 Unchanged.
Today, there were 96 new 52-Week Highs and 105 new 52-Week Lows. There were 77 new 52-Week Highs and 126 new 52-Week Lows yesterday.
The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ today was 8,779,362,024, or 5%, more than the total volume of 8,322,543,441 shares traded yesterday.
Oil Price: U.S. crude oil futures rose 3.3% to $60 a barrel in the late afternoon today. US Oil price was at $60.26 a barrel as of the time (11:30pm ET, Thursday) of this post update.
10 –year Treasury Yield: The US Treasury 10-year yield rose 11 basis points to 4.37% earlier today. The US Treasury 10-year yield was at 4.367% as of the time (11:30pm ET, Thursday).
After-hours action: Futures were little changed Thursday evening. The Dow Futures was down -0.04% vs. fair value. S&P 500 futures was up at 0.03%, and Nasdaq 100 futures was up 0.11% as of the time (11:30pm ET, Thursday) of this post update.
Market Roundup Report: The Trump administration today confirmed its intention not to implement and to rescind the AI diffusion rule that was scheduled to become effective May 15. Nvidia Inc. NVDA share price was up 0.3% today. There are likely other factors that would have affected the share price at the market session today. The big news today was the US – UK trade deal. There were also some big movers today. Robinhood Markets (HOOD) was up 8.16% or $4.08. Bitcoin was back over $100,000, so stocks of cryptocurrency dealers were up today. If the stock can go up fifteen percent on an average day, that same stock can surely decline fifteen percent on any day. A stock with a relatively high Average True Range may not be suitable for some people.

Stock in the News /Stock To Watch
President Trump today announced the US – UK trade deal. Boeing Co (BA) is going to be a major beneficiary of the trade deal with British Airlines likely to order a billion dollars worth of aircrafts from Boeing. BA stock was up 3.3% or $6.14 and closed at $191.70 with 15.3M shares traded
