The Canadian Vanguard Stock Market Report – Monday, September 29, 2025 Edition

The Toronto Market

The TSX Composite Index gained 210.63 points, or 0.71%, closing the session at 29,971.91. The TSX rally gained more strength today. The index was up and the total volume of shares traded was up. Good news all round.

                                                                               

Today’s Market Statistics:  The issues that gained (Advancers) outnumbered those that declined (Decliners). There were five Advancers for every two Decliners, or a more exact ratio of 2.55-to-1.0. In real numbers, there were 1,466 Advancers to 575 Decliners while 115 stocks remained Unchanged.

Today, there were 300 new 52-Week Highs and 28 new 52-Week Lows. There were 203 new 52-Week Highs and 21 new 52-Week Lows on Friday.

The total volume of shares traded at the TSX today was 492,833,754, or 6.7% higher than the volume of 461,843,967 shares traded on Friday.

Market Wrap-Up Report

The TSX rally gained further traction today, as a strikingly high number of stocks reached new 52-week highs. Leading the charge was the Technology sector, which surged 4.39%, outperforming all others. The Basic Materials sector also saw notable gains, rising 1.10%, buoyed by strong performances from gold mining stocks—several of which ranked among the TSX’s top 20 gainers.

Among the session’s standout performers was Shopify (TSX:SHOP), which jumped 6.17% following an announcement from OpenAI introducing a new integration module that enables direct connectivity with Etsy and Shopify e-commerce platforms.

Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TECK.B) also impressed, rising 6.34%, while Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN) continued its trend of strong showings, once again landing among the top 20 performing stocks on the TSX.

The US Markets

All three major indexes posted gains for a second consecutive session, signaling continued investor optimism. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 68.78 points, or 0.15%, to close the session at 46,316.07. The S&P 500 index added 17.51 points or 0.26%, ending the day at 6,661.21. The Nasdaq Composite outperformed, climbing 107.09 points or 0.48%, to finish at 22,591.15. The Russell 2000, which tracks small-cap stocks, eked out a modest gain of 0.93 point, or 0.04%, closing at 2435.25.

Today’s Market Statistics:  At the NYSE, the issues that gained (Advancers) outnumbered the issues that declined (Decliners). There were roughly seven Advancers for every five Decliners, or a more exact ratio of 1.38-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,453 Advancers to 1,781 Decliners with 337 Unchanged.

Today, there were 337 new 52-Week Highs and 80 new 52-Week Lows. There were 205 new 52-Week Highs and 53 new 52-Week Lows on Friday.

The total volume of stocks traded today at the NYSE was 5,464,054,952, or 6% higher than the total volume of 5,158,051,260 shares traded on Friday.

On the NASDAQ, the Advancers outnumbered the Decliners. There were six Advancers for every five Decliners, or an exact ratio of 1.21-to-1.0. In actual numbers, there were 2,586 Advancers to 2,134 Decliners with 213 Unchanged.

Today, there were 219 new 52-Week Highs and 99 new 52-Week Lows. There were 126 new 52-Week Highs and 83 new 52-Week Lows on Friday.

The total volume of shares traded at the NASDAQ today was 9,382,691,652, or 8% higher than the total volume of 8,683,094,039 shares traded on Friday.

Market Roundup Report  

Small caps were losers today and Russell 200 barely managed to avoid closing in red. The major indexes closed with gains with the total volume of shares traded up around 6% for each of the markets.  Gold and gold miner stocks’ prices have remain in their slow but steady upward climb. Basic Materials, up 0.75%, was the top sector while Technology, up 0.45%, was next. Financials was up 0.13% while Energy, down -1.76%, was the day’s laggard.

Oil Price:  U.S. crude oil futures fell 4% today. The US Oil price is at $62.82 per barrel, as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.

10 –year Treasury Yield:  The 10-year Treasury yield fell and was 4.14% earlier in the day. The 10-year yield is at 4.129%, as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.

Gold and Silver prices rose slightly Sunday evening. Gold price was at up 0.69% at $3,881.20 while Silver was down -0.11% to $46.96 per ounce as of the time of this post update.

Bitcoin (BTC-USD) is at $113,770.02, down -$445.02 or -0.40% as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.

After-hours action: Stock Futures are little changed but are mainly down slightly Monday evening. Dow Futures is down -69.00 points or -0.14% vs. fair value. S&P 500 futures is down -9.00 points or -0.15% at 6703.00 and Nasdaq 100 futures is down -43.00 points or -0.17% as of the time (11:30 pm ET, Monday) of this post update.
